What is Life and Executive Coaching?
While life and executive coaching is going through a period of remarkable success and explosive growth, when I tell someone that I am a life and executive coach, they often look at me with a perplexed look on their face, and go "Huh?"
My definition is that "coaching empowers people to lead dramatically more successful and fulfilled lives." It is an outgrowth of the dramatic scientific developments that have come out of the fields of self-help, positive psychology, peak performance, and spiritual psychology. Life coaching tends to focus on enhancing your personal fulfillment, while executive coaching tends to focus on increasing your professional success — and at the same time, they also overlap and synergistically enhance each other.
The closest reference point most people have for coaching is counseling or therapy. Like counseling, coaching tends to involve regular, weekly or bi-weekly sessions, it helps people learn about their unconscious patterns, and it helps them develop increased emotional intelligence. However, coaching is definitely not therapy, because of a few key differences.
Coaching focuses on helping high-functioning people develop even higher performance, rather than dealing with mental illness or deep wounds.
Coaching is typically done over the phone, although some sessions may also be done in person.
Coaching focuses on the present and creating the future you most want, rather than on the past.
Coaching is not covered by medical health insurance, so it tends to focus on providing profound, rapid, high return on investment. For example, Core Coaching strives to provide a 300%-1000% ROI to every client.
Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Tiger Woods — they all got where they are today with a personal or professional coach at their side. People who have tried coaching swear by it, and for good reason. Coaching accelerates individual development more than any traditional training or seminars. 30 to 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies use executive coaching to develop their most promising leaders, and they report that it is one of the highest return business strategies available today. One of the strongest determinants of self-confidence, emotional maturity — and success — is our willingness to invest in continual education, growth, and development. We are either growing or dying — and coaching is one of the most empowering tools available for those of us who have the courage to choose deep change over slow death.
Coaching brings out our best, it brings out our authentic greatness — it helps us become who we are meant to be. It is an alliance between coach and client, where we create a mutually committed partnership that is powerful enough to inspire you to step in to your greatness, to do deep change and growth work, and to get more of what you most want. While each alliance is tailored to your individual needs, it centers on four major practices for FAST results.
Focus on what matters most
Awareness of unconscious dynamics
Support and accountability
Training in emotional power tools
